Braj is regarded as the eternal, divine playground (Braj Bhoomi) of Krishna in Vaishnava tradition — every town within it carries an episode from his life. Vrindavan is associated with his youth and his play with Radha and the gopis; Govardhan with the hill he lifted to shelter the villagers from Indra's storm.
The region is closely tied to the Bhakti movement, and its temples — many centuries old — remain active centres of devotional practice, music and ritual to this day.
